Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday said that Pakistan will do its utmost [best] to end violence and establish peace in Afghanistan. He was holding a press conference alongside the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani during his maiden visit to the neighboring country.

"The people and government of Pakistan have only one concern and that is to establish peace in Afghanistan because the people of the country have suffered for four decades," said Khan.

The premier thanked the Afghan president for the invitation and warm welcome. "I have been planning to visit this historic city of Kabul for at least fifty years," said Khan.

"We have historical links and we have relations between the two countries. The whole idea of coming to Afghanistan when violence is increasing in the country is to show you that we, the people, and the government of Pakistan have only one concern that we want peace." Premier Khan told Ghani.

The prime minister also extended an invitation to the Afghan president to visit Pakistan.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani accepted Khan's invitation to visit Pakistan. In his address to the media Ghani said:

"Our common objective is to take a leap of faith [and] to overcome the distrust that has haunted our [Pak-Afghan] relationship. We have come to an understanding that a shared vision regarding cooperation is not only essential for relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan but a harbinger of regional cooperation [and] connectivity," said President Ghani and added, "Our common focus and what inspires us both is poverty eradication, empowerment of citizens of our [respective] countries within the framework of our Islamic constitutions."

Ghani affirmed that peaceful negotiations to address differences are mandatory. He said that political engagement within the framework of our shared values is the way forward and that "violence is not the answer".
