Pakistan wins U-19 squash title after five years: coach Saleem

Pakistan Junior Asian individual team coach, Muhammad Saleem said on Tuesday that Pakistan won the U-19 title in the event after a gap of five years.

“It is a good omen that Danish Atlas won the U-19 title which was last won by Aamir Atlas five years ago and reaching four players into the semi-finals of the Junior asian championship endorsed the claims that Pakistan squash Federation is endeavouring for the revival of squash at early level”,he told APP here after the arrival of the team from Jordan, Amman.

Saleem, a former international squash player from Punjab said that participation of Pakistan’s four boys and one girl players was very beneficial to boost their experience and to expose them to competitive squash.
He said Danish put up a brilliant show in the final defeating Indian Ramit Tandon 3-1, taking sweet revenge of his defeat suffered by the same player in the Asian team championship earlier this year at Colombo.
Danish, Nasir Iqbal played in U-19 while Tayyab Aslam and Ali Bokhari featured in U-17 and Zoya Khalid participated in U-19 girls competition.
He said Pakistan could have won a medal in U-17 event had its players not clashed in a semi final. “Tayyab and Ali played the semi final of the U-17 and Tayyab won the match after a long fight of 3-2 after which he could not perform that good in the final in which he was beaten by Jordanian Ahmed Siraj 3-1”,he said. Zoya lost in the second round to a super fit South Korean player.
He said Zoya’s participation marked the median participation by a Pakistani female player in an individual event of Junior Asian championship.
“Overall, it was a very good performance on part of our players,” he said adding “our girl players lack in experience and by getting ample training and coaching they will be able to produce desired results in international events in future”.
He said that out of five players who participated in the championship, three were from Punjab which speak volume of efforts and contribution being made by Punjab Squash Association for the development of the game under the able guidance of PSA President, Malik Amjad Ali Noon.
“The way PSA is focusing on the grooming of junior players under a long term plan with modern coaching and that day is not far when Punjab will emerge a new squash force in the country reestablishing its status as a nursery to produce talented players,” said Saleem.
